I have 7 and 3-year-old boys and feel like I am failing with their Turkish language. I grew up speaking OPOL myself (Turkish, Japanese) and English was my foreign language which worked well for me.
However, I am the main speaker of Turkish/ Japanese and live in England with an English husband, and I find it difficult to teach both languages. My oldest was a late speaker and is a reluctant learner. Now they have started French in school as well. I make an effort not to speak English at home, but that doesn’t work as I help him with his homework…. so I’m not consistent, and I know that doesn’t help.
7 ve 3 yaşında iki oğlum var ve Türkçe konusunda başarısız olduğumu hissediyorum. Kendim OPOL (Türkçe, Japonca) konuşarak büyüdüm ve İngilizce benim için yabancı dilimdi.
Ancak, Türkçe/Japonca benim ana dilim ve İngilizle evli İngiltere’de yaşıyorum. Her iki dili de öğretmekte zorlanıyorum. En büyük çocuğum geç konuştu ve isteksiz bir öğreniciydi. Şimdi okulda Fransızca’ya da başladılar. Evde İngilizce konuşmamak için çaba sarf ediyorum ama ödevlerine yardım ettiğim için bu işe yaramıyor…. Bu yüzden tutarlı değilim ve bunun çocuklarım için yararlı olmadığını biliyorum.
