Here is one opinion on the influence of AI on language by Dr. Viorica Marian, a professor in the Department of Psychology and Communication Sciences and Disorders at Northwestern University. She’s a psychologist and cognitive scientist whose research focuses on bilingualism and multilingualism.

Most of the AI making headlines nowadays relies on large language models (LLMs). These models work based on principles studied by linguists and psychologists for years. The rapid advancement of LLMs took many by surprise. They learn and operate using statistical probabilities, evolving AI and knowledge faster than ever before. Predictions about the future vary based on one’s expertise. As a psycholinguist, I believe that while AI offers benefits like instant translation and preserving dying languages, it poses a threat to language diversity in the long run.

There are over 7,000 languages spoken globally, with some disappearing each year. While theoretically, LLMs could be developed for all these languages, they learn from online digital content. Languages with extensive online presence, like English or Mandarin, have an advantage. Consequently, only a small fraction of languages may have robust LLMs. This could lead to the dominance of a few languages, akin to invasive species pushing out others. The consequences might include a loss of linguistic and cultural diversity, potentially impacting human thought diversity.
