Do you treat your child differently if you talk English or Turkish to your child? Yes, you do!?

Do you treat your child differently if you talk English or Turkish to your child?

This research says: “YES, you do!”

Researchers wanted to know if bilingual mothers acted differently when talking to their kids in English versus Spanish, based on their cultural background. (comment by merhabakids: simplifying: we assume that it also happens in Turkish language and culture). They published their results in the Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology. They wondered if bilingual moms switched between two cultures, being more like Latin Americans when speaking Spanish and more like European Americans when speaking English.

They found that bilingual immigrant moms kept their cultural ways, especially when speaking their native language. When they switched languages, they also switched cultural habits. This cultural change affects how they talk to their kids.

“It’s still the same mom and child, but they act differently depending on whether they’re speaking Spanish or English. Also, we saw that immigrant moms become more like Americans in how they talk to their kids the longer they live in the U.S., even when they’re speaking Spanish.”

Dr. Erika Hoff, a professor in the Department of Psychology at FAU Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, who is a senior author of the study, said, “Our findings suggest that it’s really the heritage culture that shapes behavior, not just whether someone is in Latin America or the U.S.” You can find the full article here.
